William Barkan
Development Intern

William started at SEI in October of 2005. He is currently a senior at the George Washington University finishing a BA in Political Science and History. Previously having studied Environmental Science at the University of Colorado, William has been involved in outdoor and environmental education for the last five years in his home state of California. He has also had a brief career in Wilderness Emergency Medicine. Presently he works with the staff of SEI doing research and administrative support.

Maxwell Fine
Development Intern

Max joined SEI in June 2005. Currently, he is a junior majoring in Economics and Geography at The George Washington University. Max helps SEI coordiate roundtable events and conduct research on voluntary climate change mitigation efforts by U.S. companies. Prior to SEI, Max worked as a Development Intern at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, DC, and on numerous political campaigns.

Paul Holland
Research Fellow

Paul joined SEI in February 2005. He currently assists the Institute with their project development and event coordination. Paul is also conducting research on the Kyoto Protocol and Congressional climate change legislation. Prior to joining SEI, Paul received his Master of Science degree in Nature, Society, and Environmental Policy from Oxford University’s School of Geography and the Environment. While at Oxford, Paul studied a variety of topics related to sustainable development and wrote his Masters dissertation on the macroeconomic factors influencing the creation of protected areas in the United States. Before studying at Oxford, Paul served as Legislative Fellow in the office of Congressman Robert C. Scott, where he monitored pending energy and environmental legislation. He also worked as a Deputy Field Director on gubernatorial campaigns in Virginia and Texas. Paul graduated from Princeton University in 2001 with a Bachelors degree in History.


SEI Fall 2005 Internship Opportunities:

Development Internship
SEI has embarked on a new development campaign. Interns will provide us with assistance in areas such as donor identification and outreach, tracking and writing about federal energy policy and helping to develop new programs. This internship is a great introduction to working in the non-profit sector. Web management and design experience, and knowledge of energy or environmental issues are a plus. We are looking for a commitment of 15-20 hrs. per week and will work with you to obtain academic credit if possible. Start date: September 2005. Fellowship
The SEI fellow’s primary responsibility would be to assist the board and staff in activities such as strategic planning and the development and submission of foundation proposals. During their time at SEI, a fellow will manage a particular project from start to completion. This project could take the form of publishing a report, writing a proposal, or planning and executing an event. An SEI fellowship will provide the incumbent with a high level of responsibility and valuable non-profit management experience.

The ideal candidate will be enrolled in a Masters or Doctoral Degree program having some emphasis on environmental or energy policy, and have a demonstrated interested in the non-profit sector. Good writing skills are a must. We are looking for a commitment of 15-20 hrs. per week and will work with you to obtain academic credit if possible. Start date: September 2005.
